Pythagoras’ Trousers is the science and technology radio show from the Institution of Engineering & Technology. Each week, Rhys Phillips takes a look at stories of interest from the worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, bringing these fields to a wider audience and promoting these subject areas to school pupils. The show covers topics of local, national and international interest, some topical and some more long-term.
Topics covered have included the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, game theory, unmanned aerial vehicles, the Chilean mine disaster, normalisation of deviance, the Bleachgate scandal, green rebound effects, effects of the comprehensive spending review on the science budget, the Icelandic volcanic erruption, guitar physics, modelling safety critical situations, nanoporous metals and the history of the internet.
Guests have included writer/broadcaster Simon Singh, Lyn Evans from the Large Hadron Collider project, Nicholas Briggs (the voice of the Daleks!), Marc Abrahams (editor of Annals of Improbable Research), comedian Robin Ince, Marcus du Sautoy, Ben Goldacre and Quentin Cooper.
Regular features include weekly profiles of STEM Ambassadors, Subjects of Science (profiles of scientists, engineers and inventors, both past and present), weekly roundups of interesting talks coming up in South Wales, reports from journalist Gemma Lavender, science book reviews from Dominic Lenton, gadget reviews from Kris Sangani, astronomy roundups with Chris North and Hugh Lang and news from the Skeptics world from Dean Burnett.
