Humie is an award winning performer, educator, events and project manager who developed her love of music through the church where she performed with her sisters in a gospel acapella trio. Humie went on to establish the all female gospel choir The United Harmony Singers who under her direction made several TV appearances - most notably, BBC TV soap opera ‘Tiger Bay’, ‘Double Yellow ‘ and HTV religious programme ‘In Fine Voice’; and The Butetown Junior Schools Choir who performed for the Duke of Edinburgh, Paul Robeson Junior and at the inaugural Wales Millennium Centre celebratory concert in 2004.
Humie has made numerous TV and radio appearances and was featured in the HTV documentary series ‘Melting Pot’ which captured one of her highly successful jazz concerts. Humie’s vocals were featured on the Oscar-nominated animation ‘Famous Fred’ and in 2002 Humie received a Welsh Diversity Award for Best Achievement in Performing Arts.
In recognition of her community arts and voluntary work Humie was invited to meet HRM Queen Elizabeth 11 at Buckingham Palace and in 2002 met the then Prime Minister Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street. In 2003 Humie was presented with a special award by her local councillor in recognition of her contribution to music development in the Butetown community.
Humie works as a freelance Project Manager and consultant carrying out research into music education opportunities for young people and advising organisations on their projects, policies and funding applications. Humie’s many event collaborators include the BBC, HTV, Hay Festival, Brecon Jazz Wales Millennium Centre and National Theatre Wales to name a few.
Humie and jazz singer/author Patti Flynn are co-founders of Butetown Bay Jazz Heritage Festival which celebrates Tiger Bay’s rich jazz heritage and established the School 2 School exchange project with her sister Jacky Webbe which provides opportunities for pupils to develop their music and performance skills. Humie’s advisory roles include the Creative and Cultural Skills Sector Advisory Group, Equity ULA as part of the CULT Cymru Union Learning Advisor network, and National Adviser for the Arts Council of Wales. Humie is a firm believer in continuing professional development and has an MBA in Project Management and a BA Hons in Community Education.
